Prior to treatment with autologous stem cells, Dr. Bissoon will select the type of stem cells to be used. If the decision is to use your stem cells from fat, then you will need to undergo a small lipoaspiration procedure to extract fat for the treatment.
A sample of fat tissue has about 1,000 to 2,500 more stem cells than a similar sample of bone marrow which may contain approximately100 million and 200 million stem cells.
The harvest of stem cells from fat requires liposuction. There are many types of liposuction procedures, however, it s best to perform the liposuction manually for extraction of stem cells. The manual procedure yields a greater quantity of viable stem cells.
Lipoaspiration for regenerative medicine requires a small amount of fat, which can be approximately 15-60 milliliters of fat. Once the fat is collected it is washed to remove the anesthesia and blood cells from the fat.
After the fat is cleansed it is mixed with Platelet Rich Plasma or PRP as it is commonly known. Once the two components is mixed it is then injected into the joint or injured area.
The procedure from start to finish can take 1-2 hours based on the number of areas being treated.
After the procedure, the patient can go about most of their daily activity with limitation of vigorous activity for 5-14 days.
